Wolfberry from Zhongning county in Ningxia province is one of the medicinal and edible plants promulgated by the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China. The name Wolfberry first appeared in Shi Jing more than 2500 years ago. The Shennong’s Classic of Material Medica, the first official codex in ancient China, mentioned this fruit and named it as a “top grade”. Li Shi-zhen of Ming Dynasty in his Compendium of Materia Medica provided a detailed discussion. Artificial cultivation began more than 600 years ago.
